Prioritizing the Person: Mental Health & Wellbeing Services for Students

March 30th, 2026

Read time: 5 minutes

For many students, the road to a high school diploma isn’t blocked by a lack of intelligence, but by the sheer weight of life happening outside the classroom. When burdened by past trauma, financial stress, or mental health struggles—it’s not easy to switch into “learning mode.” It’s like getting stuck in “survival mode.”

At Grad Solutions, we recognize that you are a person long before you are a student, and we believe that healing isn’t a distraction from your education—it is the very foundation that makes it possible. By providing free, confidential telehealth counseling services, we aim to help you unpack the “invisible backpack” of life’s challenges, moving beyond just getting by so you can finally focus, excel, and cross the graduation stage with confidence.

Removing the Barriers: Why Virtual Counseling?

As an online program, Grad Solution has enrolled students from throughout Arizona. Many live in rural areas or areas where counseling or therapy services are not readily available. These “mental health deserts” create an obstacle for those in need of services.

Beyond the physical inaccessibility of counseling services, there are often financial barriers to good-quality counseling. On average, a therapy session can cost $70–$100 per week without insurance, according to BetterHelp. This high price tag prevents many students from accessing the mental health care they need.

Grad Solutions’ virtual counseling option removes this first obstacle to counseling services by offering students free counseling. Through the Resource Specialty team, students can be referred to counseling services and receive mental health support at no cost to the student.

Another obstacle is overcome with the availability of telehealth services. In-person counseling is offered to all students, but travel to the Gilbert area is not always possible. The telehealth appointment option makes counseling services accessible to students by allowing them to attend their counseling sessions from anywhere with an internet connection. Not only does this option provide students with more privacy, but there’s also less worry about transportation or schedule coordination.

Removing these simple but critical barriers allows students to focus on getting the help they need and worry less. Not worrying so much about getting the right help gives them the breathing space to heal and focus better on responsibilities like parenting, work, and school.

Addressing Trauma and the Path to “Learning Mode”

Many students experience challenges with the skills needed to progress through each grade. Those who experience difficult childhood events, like ongoing stress or trauma, during their formative years face their own set of challenges because of the body’s natural protective response.

When events activate our sympathetic nervous system, the body goes into a heightened state, sometimes referred to as “fight, flight, or freeze.”

When our sympathetic nervous system is activated for an extended period, as with ongoing stress or trauma, our brain’s ability to process normally is diminished. This in turn, affects the mental processes involved in gaining knowledge; remembering, judging, and problem-solving are challenged.

Students who have trauma or ongoing stress often experience difficulty learning and retaining information, which makes academic progress difficult. For these students, prioritizing professional support services, like therapy or counseling, can be the lifeline that helps them stay afloat.

Counseling can help individuals navigate their body’s protective responses and the emotions from the trauma they may have experienced. Seeking help is a proactive tool for success, not a sign of weakness.

From Healing to Excelling: The Academic Ripple Effect

There is a “ripple effect” of improvements when a student gets the counseling support they need. When they feel heard and supported emotionally, their brains feel safe enough to engage in complex problem-solving and critical thinking.

Counseling provides a safe, non-judgmental space to heal from past pain. Individuals can learn how to manage emotions like grief or anger and gain healthier coping tools for stress and mental health conditions. Additional cognitive benefits of improved mental health include:

  • Increased Focus: Once the “noise” of personal stress and trauma is managed, students often find they can concentrate for longer periods.
  • Improved Retention: Stress hormones (such as cortisol) can interfere with memory. Lowering stress through counseling literally helps students remember what they study.
  • Consistency: Students with mental health support are less likely to “ghost” their supporters or drop out when life gets difficult because they have a professional to help them navigate the storm.

Your “Success Team” Includes a Counselor

When a student enrolls at Grad Solutions, they are surrounded by a team of caring supporters who want to see the student succeed. These supporters, including mentors and instructors, work alongside counselors to help students heal from their past or address current sources of stress.

The counseling services provided by Grad Solutions are private and confidential. They are offered exclusively for the student’s well-being. To get access to these services, current students can ask their Mentor or Resource Specialist for a referral.
