“I Just Want to Join the Military”: Why Your Recruiter Wants You to Have a Traditional High School Diploma

February 9th, 2026

Read time: 4 minutes

You’re ready. You’ve been watching the videos, practicing push-ups, and you can already see yourself in uniform. You are ready to serve your country, leave your hometown, and start something new.

But imagine walking into a recruiting office, full of adrenaline, only to have the recruiter ask you that one question: “Do you have your high school diploma?”

If you answer “No,” or “I was thinking about getting a GED,” the conversation often changes. For many potential recruits, this feels like unnecessary red tape. If you can pass the physical and the ASVAB, why does a piece of paper from high school matter?

To the Department of Defense, that piece of paper matters a lot. Here is the breakdown of why your recruiter is pushing you to finish high school, and why getting your diploma through a program like Grad Solutions is your “Fast Pass” to enlistment.

1. The Tier System: Why You Want to Be “Tier 1”

The military classifies education credentials into tiers. This is the single most important thing you need to understand about enlisting.

  • Tier 1: High School Diploma graduates (and those with some college credits).
  • Tier 2: GED, HiSET, TASC, and other equivalency certificate holders.
  • Tier 3: No credentials (almost never eligible).

Recruiters are under immense pressure to fill their ranks with Tier 1 candidates. Why? Because statistically, the military views Tier 1 candidates as lower risk. The military is a numbers game, and the numbers say that students who stick it out to earn a traditional diploma are more likely to stick it out through Basic Training and their first term of enlistment.

2. The “GED Cap” is Real

You might be thinking, “But my uncle got in with a GED.”

That may be true, but times have changed, and slots are limited. Each branch of the military limits the number of Tier 2 (GED) candidates they accept each year. In some branches, like the Air Force or Coast Guard, Tier 2 enlistment is incredibly rare—sometimes less than 1% of all recruits

If you have a GED, you are competing for a tiny handful of spots against every other person with a GED. If you have a high school diploma, the door is open. By earning your diploma, you move from a waiting list to the “ready to ship” list.

3. The ASVAB Hurdle

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is the test that determines if you can join and what jobs you qualify for.

Here is the hard truth: If you have a GED, you usually have to score higher.

Because Tier 2 spots are so competitive, recruiters often require higher ASVAB scores from GED holders just to get their foot in the door. A Tier 1 Diploma candidate might qualify with a score of 31 (depending on the branch), while a Tier 2 candidate might need a 50 or higher to even be considered for one of those rare slots.

Getting your diploma removes that handicap. It puts you on an even playing field where your score dictates your job, not just your eligibility to join.

4. Better Bonuses and Job Choices

Enlisting isn’t just about “getting in”; it’s about setting yourself up for a career.

  • Enlistment Bonuses: Many enlistment bonuses (which can range up to $40,000 or more depending on the need) are exclusively available or significantly higher for Tier 1 recruits.
  • Job Selection: Some Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) are effectively closed off to Tier 2 candidates because the security clearance or technical school requirements favor those with a traditional education background.

If you want the best choice of jobs—Cyber Security, Intelligence, Aviation, Medical—you want a diploma.

5. Show That You Can Finish

Recruiters aren’t trying to be mean. They want you to succeed. When a recruiter looks at a candidate with a high school diploma, they see someone who dealt with hard classes, navigating social pressure, and completing assignments they didn’t want to do—yet finished anyway.

That is exactly what military service is. It is showing up when you don’t want to, doing tasks that seem mundane, and seeing the mission through to the end.
