Beyond the Diploma: How the Next Step Program Prepares You for Life After High School

Read time: 4 minutes

If you’re like most teens, there’s probably been a time when you asked yourself, “What’s the point?” or wondered if it’s “worth it.” You may have thought, “Is this actually going to help me get a better job?”

Many students drop out or struggle because they don’t see the value of high school or how it connects to their future. We’re told that a high school diploma is the path to a better future, but it’s hard to remember when daily struggles emerge.

In truth, a diploma is not only worth it, but it’s the starting point for a prosperous adulthood. The Grad Solution Next Step program exists for this reason…. They help enrolled students plan for what comes after the diploma.

Not only can teens and young adults work on finishing their high school diploma at Grad Solutions, but they can also have a game plan for life after high school. The Next Step team helps teens and adults transition confidently into their future.

The Five Pathways to the Future

Everyone has different dreams and desires for their future. Students enrolled at Grad Solutions can get help planning their future, no matter which path they choose. The Next Step team provides information and support for five different pathways:

Grad to Work

For those entering the workforce during high school or immediately after, the Next Step team helps them gain an edge in finding a better job. They assist with resumé building, interview prep, and soft skills training.

Military Service

Those who want to go into the military can get guidance on the different branches, enlistment requirements, and ASVAB preparation. Knowing which branch of service you want to enlist in and what the requirements are can make the process go smoother.

Trade & Certificate Programs

There are many programs and schools offering training and certifications in specific trades, but finding the right one can be a challenge. The Next Step team can connect those who would like to get into a hands-on career, like electrical, HVAC, welding, phlebotomy, nursing, ultrasound, or cosmetology, with trade programs that align with their desired trade.

College Degree Seeking

Students who want to attend a four-year college but aren’t sure if they’re ready may decide to attend a community college first. Others considering a two-year degree may want additional information before enrolling. The Next Step counselors can help these students navigate the community college system, learn about transferring, and/or help decide which certifications or degrees to pursue.

University Rigor

Getting into a four-year university can be time-consuming and costly. There are many considerations when preparing to attend university. The Next Step college counselors help students preparing for the admissions process decide on a bachelor’s degree program and make the transition to a four-year institution.

These pathways ensure that students get personalized information and support in the directions they want to take after high school. They ensure that no student graduates without a plan for moving forward.

Individualized Support Tools

Students who are still deciding on a path or need other types of “adulting” advice can meet with a Next Step team member to have their questions answered. The team can help students in a few ways:

  • One-on-One Counseling: Access to dedicated counselors for personalized strategy sessions.
  • Financial Literacy & Aid: Provide assistance with FAFSA applications, searching for scholarships, and understanding the requirements to qualify for aid.
  • Concurrent Enrollment: Students who want to get ahead can start earning college or trade credits while finishing high school requirements.

Real-World Readiness (The Work Study Program)

Real work experience goes a long way to helping teens and young adults get a head start in their careers and life. While enrolled at Grad Solutions, students can earn elective credits toward their diploma with the Work Study program. The Work Study program allows students to earn elective credits for their current jobs or volunteer work.

Work experience is life experience. Gaining work experience is an excellent way to supplement your high school studies and support your personal growth journey.

Your Future, Your Pace

If you struggled in high school before, the Grad Solutions program is an excellent way to earn your diploma and be prepared for the future. Whether you’ve been out of school for weeks, months, or years, if you’re between 16 and 21 years old, you can get access to the help you need to finish.

The transition into adulthood is riddled with obstacles. Grad Solutions ensures you graduate with a plan for the next step in life, not just a diploma.
