5 Signs That You’re Ready to Go Back to School: A Guide for 17–21-Year-Olds

August 4th, 2025

Read time: 6 minutes

Dropping out of high school is often more complicated than most people think. You probably didn’t just decide to drop out, but experienced multiple challenges that led to dropping out. You may have had to work to support your family. Maybe you were dealing with mental health issues, or school didn’t feel like it was for you. No matter the reason, the good news is this: just because you left school doesn’t mean your story is over.

If you’re between the ages of 17 and 21, you still have time to turn things around—and going back to school might be the first step. But how do you know if you’re ready? Let’s break down some signs to look for, key questions to ask yourself, and how to make the choice that’s right for your future.

1. You’re Tired of Feeling Stuck

Many young people who leave school feel like they’re in limbo. You may feel stuck in a job that doesn’t pay well, or frustrated when job applications ask for a diploma you don’t have. Maybe you’re ready to move forward, but every path seems to require a high school diploma.

If you’re feeling limited and want more opportunities—whether it’s a better job, joining the military, or going to college—going back to school could be your way forward. A diploma isn’t the only key to success, but it unlocks many doors.

2. You’re Willing to Commit (Even If It’s Not Easy)

Let’s be real: going back to school takes effort. There will be days when you don’t feel like logging in or turning in assignments. But if you’re willing to show up—even when it’s hard—that’s a big sign you’re ready.

You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t need to have it all together. But if you’re ready to make a consistent effort and accept help along the way, you’re already ahead of the game.

Ask yourself:

  • Can I commit a few hours a week to schoolwork?
  • Am I open to working with a mentor, teacher, or support staff?
  • Do I want to graduate—even if it takes some time and energy?

If you said yes to those, you might be more ready than you think.

3. You’re Thinking About Your Future

Going back to school isn’t just about getting a diploma—it’s about what you want after that. Do you dream of starting your own business? Working in healthcare? Getting a stable job with benefits?

You don’t have it all figured out —but if you’re starting to think about your long-term goals, going back to school can be the launchpad to get there.

Think about:

  • Where do I want to be a year from now?
  • What kind of lifestyle do I want to live?
  • What kind of example do I want to set—for myself, my family, or even future kids?

4. You’re Looking for Support

One of the biggest reasons people drop out of school is a lack of support. Maybe you didn’t have teachers who believed in you, or personal issues got in the way. The good news? The right school program can give you the tools and encouragement you need to succeed this time.

When choosing to go back, find a program that offers:

  • Flexibility (especially if you work or have other responsibilities)
  • Mentors or success coaches who check in with you
  • Mental health and emotional support
  • An understanding of the challenges you’ve faced

Going back to school doesn’t mean going it alone. You deserve a second chance—with support that works for you.

5. You’ve Got Something to Prove—to Yourself

Sometimes the biggest motivator isn’t the job, the money, or the diploma—it’s the feeling of pride that comes from finishing something you once thought was impossible.

If you’ve ever thought, “I want to prove I can do this,” that’s powerful. And the truth is, you can do this. Life may have taken you off course, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find your way back.

Graduating high school doesn’t just check a box—it helps you build confidence and momentum for whatever comes next.

Key Questions to Ask Before You Go Back to School

Why do I want to finish school now?

Be honest. Is it for a job, your family, your future—or just because you’re ready? There’s no wrong answer.

What’s changed since I dropped out?

Perhaps you’ve matured, found a support system, or discovered what truly matters to you. Recognizing the changes helps you see how you’re more prepared now.

What kind of school fits me best?

Some people thrive in traditional classrooms. Others do better online or with flexible schedules. Find a program that meets you where you are.

How will I manage my time?

Can I realistically balance school with work, family, or other commitments? What will I need to say “no” to in order to say “yes” to school? Being honest about your schedule and priorities can help you avoid burnout.

What support systems do I have in place?

Do I have friends, mentors, or family who will encourage me? Will the school offer support like tutoring, parenting help, success coaches, or mental health resources? No one finishes alone. Support makes a big difference.

Am I willing to ask for help when I need it?

No one finishes alone. Support makes a huge difference. In many cases, it makes all the difference.

What are my goals after graduation?

Do I want to go to college, learn a trade, join the military, or find a better job? How will finishing school help me reach those goals? A clear vision for life after school will help you stay motivated.

So… Are You Ready to Return to School?

You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to have every answer. But if you’re willing to try, ask for help, and believe in yourself—even just a little—you might be more ready than you realize.

Going back to school isn’t about the past. It’s about your future. It’s about rising from challenges and taking ownership of your story.
