Growing up, most of us were given a pretty straightforward playbook for life after high school: finish your classes, graduate, apply to a four-year university, take out some loans, and figure out the rest as you go.

While that path works for some people, it isn’t the only way to succeed. For many students, especially adult learners and those who have taken different routes, the traditional four-year college plan may not match their real-life goals, responsibilities, or financial needs.

There are many practical parts of life after high school that traditional classrooms rarely talk about. Here are three important lessons about college, careers, and building a path that fits you, along with tips on how to get started today.

1. A Four-Year College Isn’t the Only Choice

A common myth about life after high school is that only a four-year university degree counts toward a real career. In reality, post-high school education can take many different forms. There are several alternatives to a four-university degree.

Often, four-year universities require a big investment of time and money, including tuition, housing, and classes that might not relate to your career interests. While these programs are great for fields like medicine, law, or engineering, they are not the only way to build a rewarding and stable life.

There are many career options that let you choose the path that fits your goals best. Community colleges, trade schools, and certification programs give you focused training and practical skills for your career. Most vocational or trade school programs can be completed in about two years.

2. Trade Careers Offer High Pay, High Growth Opportunities

People often forget to mention trade careers when talking about excellent job options. But skilled trades offer some of the most exciting, in-demand, and well-paying jobs out there today.

Jobs like electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, welding, HVAC, auto repair, and advanced manufacturing offer steady careers without needing a bachelor’s degree. Many trades also have paid apprenticeships, so you can earn money while you learn and avoid taking on a lot of debt.

Besides traditional trades, many growing industries offer good pay without needing four years at a university. Jobs like nursing, logistics, EMS, paralegal work, dental hygiene, and ultrasound focus more on specific certifications and hands-on skills than degrees.

There are many career options in a vocation.  You can find some of them on the U.S. Career Institute’s list of “82 High-Paying Jobs That Don’t Require a Degree.” It is possible to find one where your skills, interests, and needs match real job opportunities.

3. You Don’t Have to Figure It Out All by Yourself
